Chambers Creek Park

Formerly known as the Chambers Creek Properties, this park is just past Steilacoom in University Place.  It is definitely a park in progress, but their are already great walking trails, beach access, and toilet facilities. A bonus for dog lovers is that it is pet friendly, with an enclosed off leash area, and off leash beach area. This can be somewhat hard to find in the South Sound. It is only 30 minutes from Olympia, and if you go via Dupont quite a nice leisurely drive and somewhat scenic.

Pierce County maintains the site.Chambers Creek Properties This short description from their web site does not do the park justice;

This 930-acre site includes over two miles of saltwater shoreline, two-and-a-half miles of urban creek and canyon, and breathtaking mountain and Puget Sound views.

Come visit us and walk the public trails, play golf or dine at Chambers Bay, relax at Central or North Meadow, take a walk on the beach, or see the award-winning Environmental Services Building.

They offer some great suggestions of what to do at the park. The trails are great and well maintained. The hike from the Central Meadow to the North Meadow, is a couple of miles and offers some great views of the sound.

As the trails are paved it is great for taking your little kids on their trikes. Plenty of meadow for them to run around on too. Caution however should be taken in the summer, as their are little to no trees to shelter from the sun.

There is also the Chambers Bay Golf Course which hosted the 2010 USGA golf tournament. From what we saw it is somewhat reminiscent of a St Andrews style course with little vegetation.

Topside Bar & Grill for Lunch!

The sleepy little village of Steilacoom is the sort of place you by-pass normally. Unless you are catching a Pierce County ferry to Ketron or Anderson Island (or if your on the bus to McNeil Island, the high security prison), you probably do not have a reason to go out of your way to visit. Well now that you know the park is there you do!

We stopped at Jake’s Bistro and Bar for lunch, on the recommendation of a friend. It was a great recommendation (check Yelp if you do not believe me). They have 42 beers on tap and a great pub style menu to order from. Fantastic food albeit maybe a tad on the more expensive side (not that that will stop us going back).
